Edward Elgar's deeply personal Violin Sonata is one of the great masterpieces of English chamber music, full of warmth, lyricism and, in the composer's words, "golden sounds". Alongside it is his spirited 'Andante and Allegro' for oboe quartet and Charlotte Bray's atmospheric Bluer than Midnight, before a magnificent Piano Quintet by Vaughan Williams brings the evening to a powerful close. Rich in melody and sweeping romanticism, we open the season with some of England's finest chamber music.
